The difference between CBD oil and Medical Marijuana

Are medical Marijuana and CBD oil the same thing?

There seems to be a growing misconception about medical marijuana (cannabis) and CBD oil. Let’s go over the difference between the two and hopefully, by the end you will know the difference between medical marijuana (cannabis) and CBD like the back of your hand.

First of all, I write cannabis as in the UK cannabis is a more used term for marijuana.

Medical marijuana (cannabis) is, what it says on the tin. It is marijuana which has been approved legal for certain medical conditions in recent times.

Medical marijuana in the USA comes in an oil for ingestion or bud for inhalation. Medical marijuana (cannabis) contains all aspects of the plant. It contains the full spectrum of cannabinoids, terpenes etc, as well as CBD and THC. In the UK currently, it is only available in an oil application.

THC is the compound in cannabis which creates the high, CBD is what we use for the health benefits. But both can work together synergistically to reduce pain, and is the product more associated with people suffering from cancer or other life-threatening diseases.

Medical cannabis oil in the UK has been approved this year 2018 for certain people (a very, very small amount of people) primarily children, who suffer with life threatening epilepsy.

Typically, we use CBD for conditions, such as:

1. Seizures
2. Inflammation
3. Pain
4. Psychosis and mental disorders
5. Inflammatory bowel disease
6. Nausea
7. Migraines
8. Depression
9. Anxiety

THC is now being used for:

1. Pain
2. Muscle spasticity
3. Glaucoma
4. Insomnia
5. Low appetite
6. Nausea
7. Anxiety

So, combined together there is a whole host of condition which Medical marijuana can deal with. But Medical marijuana isn’t easy to get approved for. Unless you live in a state where recreational cannabis use is now legal (lucky you).

We have established medical marijuana (cannabis) contains all the elements to relieve chronic pain but it leaves us feeling high, or stoned. Not all of us want to feel that way, it certainly makes day to day living a little more fun, but a little more difficult.

THC also has some side effects including:

  1. Paranoia and Anxiety
  2. Sleepiness and Lethargy
  3. Impaired memory
  4. dry mouth
  5. Dry red itchy eyes
  6. Headaches

CBD oil is oil extracted from the hemp plant. Now CBD oil unlike medical marijuana contains little to no THC. CBD oil is perfectly legal to buy and it is being used more and more to treat pain, anxiety, inflammation and a whole lot more.

CBD oil is what has been accredited to stop seizures in children and adults. CBD seems to be the extract from the cannabis plant which is more responsible for the health and medical benefits now being investigated.

CBD has little to no side effects, is easily available in an oil for sublingual use.

Looking back at things we now know the difference between medical marijuana and CBD oil:

  1. CBD oil and Medical marijuana (cannabis) are not the same thing
  2. Medical marijuana contains THC which will get you high
  3. CBD contains little to no THC
  4. Both products can be used to relieve pain
  5. THC has more side effects

On a final note. As medical marijuana and CBD are being investigated more, both are being used by people suffering from chronic pain or other health issues. It really isn’t a one shoe fits all approach. What works for somebody else may not work for you.
